Land administration project : Thailand
Abbott, Kyle, Benjamin King and Mike Ford
Thailand is a newly industrialised country following the collapse of the Thai baht and economy in 1997. Prior to the collapse, one of the most important aspects of the land tenure system in Thailand was the use and possession of land in order to retain ownership or legal interests. The physical boundaries of parcels defined the legal boundaries through the general boundaryy approach. As a result, aerial photography proved to be somewhat successful, allowing the introduction of a land registration system. By the early 19800s however, Thailand had three different mapping systems with the overall land administration system becoming quite ineffective. In 1984, Thailand applied to the World Bank, which provided funding to build the LTP through the Department of Lands (DoL). The land and environmental issues Thailand once faced have now mostly been addressed through the implementation of the program. Further research has provided means by which issues not currently focussed on in the current LTP can be improved and possible implementation issues to be addressed.
