A variety of technologies for setting up an INSPIRE SDI : an alternative solutions

Deleurme, Arnaud

The INSPIRE directive sets up a new diffusion model of geographical information. It throws itself into setting up Spatial Data Infrastructures in each country of the European Union. It stands on using new technologies applications and new architectures of the internet domain. Generally, Geographical Information was used on desktop and software, but nowadays it is more and more used on server and on offering solutions to clients. The geographical information storage becomes more complex with the increasing of internet applications. Thatts why today we can observe a variety of technologies, tools, and applications used to set up Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI). They reflect the dynamic nature of internet field: interactive, applications which are changing all the time, free software, open sourcee The FYROM needs to set up a National SDI. It could be built using a large tools and technologies diversity. So, a technology watch is very important. The implantation rules of the INSPIRE directive should permit the SDI interoperability. This presentation tries to show you different possibilities and alternative solutions to set up an efficient SDI, taking into consideration the high prices of softwares and licenses which are determinant in the budget figures. New communities has emerged and formed users groups and developers in relation with the growing trend and the development of the information and communication technologies (ICT). It explains the continuous appearence of new tools of spatial reference. They are available freely and on-line for the websurfer. These tools can be developed for a special project and they are supported by a particular community. It could be are the result of individual initiative. This publication try to arouse awareness about the existence of these solutions in order to comply the requirements of the INSPIRE directive. They are attractive by the price and they are interoperable. A large variety of technologies is available to build a SDI but itts more difficult to decide about its financing and its running.
