Assessing the Significance of Tenure in REDD+: UN-REDD Experience in Partner Countries

Bradley, Amanda

Launched in 2008 the UN-REDD Programme supports national REDD+ readiness efforts in 56 partner countries spanning Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. In recent years, the UN-REDD Programme has placed increased emphasis on tenure issues in the context of REDD+. This paper examines the progress and challenges in regards to addressing tenure issues within national REDD+ programmes. It presents the forthcoming results of tenure and REDD+ assessments in three UN-REDD partner countries. The paper provides a description of the motivations and process for developing these assessments, as well as some of the challenges and obstacles involved. Further, it provides a summary of the preliminary findings and also draws attention to some of the variations across countries and regions. Finally, the outlook for further work on tenure within UN-REDD is described.
