Beyond the agro-export boom: the challenges of land concentration and fragmentation in Chile
Eduardo Villavicencio-Pinto
This study examines the consolidation of private rural property in Chile and the key elements demanding a re-discussion of its boundaries and content. To achieve this, I utilise concentration and fragmentation as analytical categories. The former accounts for a historically high presence, and the latter, a strong expansion between 2020 and 2022, primarily focused on smaller agricultural estates. Thus, it is argued that the historical model of private property, individual and exclusive, constitutes an element that complicates the design and implementation of policies requiring collaborative and cooperative elements in the management of rural property in the face of climate change.
