Boundary demarcation and documentation in a production environment
Petring, Jochen
Powerpoint presentation.
The presentation dealt with the demarcation of the frontier between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen. Hansa Luftbild was founded in 1923 and has many years' experience of international geographic consultancy. This was Hansa Luftbild's third international frontier demarcation project in the Arabian Peninsula and took five years to complete. Hansa Luftbild undertook both monumentation on the ground and the production of all associated documentation including aerial photography and eight different series of maps. The maps show much more than just a frontier alignment - they required the recording of 25,000 place names. Impressive statistics and photographs illustrated the scale of the project and the difficulties of operating in an unforgiving environment. Much of the frontier goes through sandy desert or rugged mountain country, with extreme temperatures throughout and high humidity towards the coast. Operational logistics stretched the capacity of man and machine (e.g. helicopters) to their limits. A major conclusion of the project is that demarcation of a boundary results in not just a line on a map but a more substantial area of land on all sides of, and profoundly influenced by, this line.
