Capacity building in land management : the need for global academic partnership

Magel, Holger

Though the importance of land management is a widely recognized and a crucial issue at all national and international policy, decision making and discussion levels, still many developing countries are not able to exercise it properly due to serious lack of professional capacity. Therefore, there is a significant need for capacity development and thus for academic programmes dealing with land management. This includes basic and continuous educational programmes which could enable professionals to deal with the complex issues of implementing sustainable land management and dealing with current national and international challenges. According to the Millennium Development Goals more global partnerships are necessary to contribute to a sustainable development. The paper suggests that for capacity building, a global partnership at academic level is crucial. Furthermore, the paper argues that there is a need for a dynamic model for developing and implementing Land Management Curricula and adapting them to the changing frame conditions.
