Capacity development in land : academic and professional development

Capacity development is a rather new term that takes a more holistic approach and therefor goes deeper than staff training and even capacity building. A recent definition by OECD is a process whereby people, organisations and societies as a whole unleash, strengthen, create, adapt and maintain capacity over time to achieve their development goalss (1). It is important to realize that capacity comprises of: generic (soft) aspects; specific (technical) aspects; the full ownership of the process by those individuals, organisations, or societies whose capacities are being developed. The importance of capacity development is increasingly recognised, but it is difficult to achieve.
