Lao Peoplees Democratic Republic is a land-locked country in South East Asia. The country has a total land area of 236,800 sq. km and a total population of 5.6 million, growing annually at 2.1%. About 50 percent of the population is concentrated in Vientiane Capital City and the provinces of Vientiane, Savannakhet, Champassak and Luangprabang. According to the 2005 Census, about 27% of the population was living in urban areas. The average population density, calculated at 24 persons per sq. km (2005 census), was among the lowest in East Asia. Over half of the population (some 52%) belongs to the Lao groups and some 48% belongs to other ethnic groups. Population projections indicate an expected total of 8.7 million inhabitants by 2020. The average household size in urban areas was 6.3 and slightly larger at 6.5 in rural areas.
