Developing relevant fundamental spatial datasets for disaster risk reduction and management : a project concept for the Asean region

Vicente, Randolf Sevidal

Land surveying and geomatics produce geographic information products that play crucial roles in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) in any jurisdiction. These information packages facilitate DRRM policy-making, and help rationalize science-based and technology-adaptive measures to effectively reduce disaster risks and manage impacts on lives and properties. Marginal focus, however, has been given to the role of the surveying profession in DRRM processes especially in developing countries. Public policy institutions involved in DRRM need to tap and maximize the potential of this professional resource. Collectively, these institutions should create an enabling environment for productive partnerships within the purview of good governance and the mainstreaming of participation of surveying professionals in DRRM.
