In recent years, numerous mul0na0onal food and beverage
companies have made commitments to respect land rights
throughout their supply chains. For Illovo Sugar Africa (“Illovo”),
Africa’s largest producer and manufacturer of sugarcane, this
commitment included adop0on of its Group Guidelines on Land
and Land Rights and Road Map on Land Rights in 2015. These
policies commit the company to interna0onal standards and
best prac0ces, including the Voluntary Guidelines on the
Responsible Governance of Tenure and the principles of Free,
Prior, and Informed Consent.
It is within this context that the United Kingdom Department
for Interna0onal Development’s LEGEND Program, with in kind
contribu0on from Illovo, funded a partnership between
Landesa and Illovo 0tled From Commitment to Prac<ce:
Suppor<ng the Opera<onaliza<on of Private Sector Land Rights
Commitments (“C2P Land Project”).
The Project seeks to help Illovo transi0on from commitment to
prac0ce in Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania by: building the
capacity of company staff and civil society organiza0ons (CSOs),
cul0va0ng strategic partnerships between CSOs and Illovo,
assessing land issues and opportuni0es, and developing the
LandAssess Tool to help companies iden0fy and manage land
risks.
