The Wenninger Company of Munich is setting up, in a public-private-partnership with the Bavarian Ordnance Survey a GIS for cadastral data which operates on both INTRA-and INTERNET. It is based on the Autodesk Mapguide system. The project aims at achieving full coverage of Bavaria by the year 2000. Digitizing of parcels which are not yet available in digital form is foreseen by private surveying bureaus. The user will be put in a position that he can download cadastral or other geographic information directly from the Web. This article describes the market needs, the idea and applicational perspectives of such a system, potentially far off from the original surveying business.
