GOVERNING THE COMMONS – COMMON FOREST AS A SOLUTION

Kauko Viitanen, Visa Korhonen et al

Today, approximately 60% of Finnish forests are private. Owners are partially unable of managing their forests. Forests also have significant effects on the climate. On the one hand, forests contribute to half of Finland's total pollutant emissions. On the other hand, active forest management and use maintain their ability to bind carbon dioxide as fossil fuels and other non-renewable materials are replaced by renewable sources.
The article contains an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the common forest system in Finland. There is an example of the establishment of a common forest in conjunction with a forest land reallotment. The aim is increasing the understanding of common forests as a form of ownership and thus to provide others with ideas on how to develop their own systems with the assistance of similar instruments.
