How important is land-use study for Moroccan sites of biological and ecological interest

Yousfi, Khalid & Mohammed Essadiki

MedWetCoast is an international project to conserve globally threatened biodiversity in Mediterranean wetland and coastal ecosystems. In Morocco, the Sites of Biological and Ecological Interest (SIBE) are in the Eastern region and include the Moulouya River, a rich natural area supporting several rare bird species. The site borders Moulouya River, the longest Moroccan river emptying into the Mediterranean. Land ownership is the basic component of economic and social development in the SIBE. Land ownership information is required to identify land entities within the SIBE. This information is used to determine the economic characteristics necessary for the implementation of development projects. Consequently, knowledge of rules, rights and restrictions related to land are very important. Land study is the main tool for establishing these and clarifying the legal status of the property. It will facilitate planning of various activities aimed at conservation of the SIBE. It is a means of getting a clear and up-to-date picture of the range of land in the SIBE (registered, non-registered, private, publicly-owned, etc.). The study identified two categories of property: registered (land ownership) and in the process of registration (requisitions); and non-registered. Other land types were: private properties, private State-owned, public maritime, public roads and public hydrological domains.
