Institutional developments in land administration in Zanzibar

History shows that an institutionalized land administration started with the coming of the British when they formally established their rule in Zanzibar in 1890. In early 1900s they establishment Land Survey section in the Public Works Department in order to oversee all land administration activities in the country. Since then, Zanzibar has experienced a remarkable development in its Land Administration institutions. Over the years, various measures have been taken in an attempt to improve land administration. The measures have been aimed at making land available for different purposes, increasing productivity and improving quality of life. This paper seeks to address the various stages and issues as well as pieces of legislation and policies which have been put forward over the years on land administration and their impact on the development of the institution and the general public throughout its history until today.
