Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will require different actors and sectors to work together to collectively revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development. In particular, the Goals explicitly call for “multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the sustainable development goals in all countries, in particular developing countries”. These multi-stakeholder processes traditionally bring together government, civil society and the private sector to address complex development challenges that no one sector alone has the capacity to address. What is less clear, however, is how local communities at the grassroots – and their needs – are represented in the discussions and the solutions, particularly with regard to recognising diversities and dynamics at the local level, addressing existing expectations, local livelihood priorities and strategies, and engagement with civil society organizations, academic researchers and businesses.
