Land reform : experience from Nigeria

In Africa, land tenure system has generally been broadly described as rigid, creating obstacles in the way of development. Solutions to the land tenure system have involved the adoptions of some institutional changes such as the promulgation of legislation or the adoption of some revolutionary principles. In Nigeria, the intervention into the land problem involves the promulgation of the 1978 Land Use Act. This paper examines the Nigerian experience on the land reform issue. It highlights the nature and dimension of Nigeriaas land tenure problems before the 1978 land reform. The scope and content of the land reform act are identified. The problems and limitations of the land reform act are examined. Finally, solution to solving the land holding problems in Nigeria are presented.
