During this Masterclass and to conclude the week, we will demonstrate and use the Land-use Planner, an open tool for planners, policymakers, facilitators and stakeholders to make informed decisions about land-use, forests and commodities.
The Land-use Planner makes it easy to analyze and compare options for rural land use, and to
balance economic, social and environmental interests, including employment, food security and carbon sequestration. The tool also helps planners to provide the information stakeholders need
to understand and participate in decision-making.
a. Territory
The user defines the general characteristics of the considered territory. This first step allows the audience to agree on the main components (territory name, population, ecological zone, soil, etc.).
b. Land use The user defines the current land uses of the territory. It is recommended to analyze land use maps of the territory. Six main land-use categories are defined in the tool: Forest, Fallow, Annual crop, Perennial crop, Livestock, Other.
c. Scenarios
The user imagines scenarios of how land use may change in the future with different groups of
stakeholders within a participatory process.
d. Results The results allow stakeholders to compare and discuss different land-use scenarios. The results of
the projections for different scenarios are illustrated in simple visual terms for a set of key indicators.
