Linking Land Tenure and Use, Catalyzing land use innovation for grassroots women

Lattimore

One of the most known causes of gross violation of human rights is resource management especially land. Disputes concerning land have triggered a number of wars, conflicts worldwide. Similarly, at the family level, resource sharing has caused disharmony resulting into domestic disputes, land grabbing, disinheritance, suicide, homelessness and leaving grassroots women with no safety. Such disharmony manifests itself in domestic violence problems in administering estate of diseased persons/ husbands in addition to separation/ neglect and divorce amongst others. Therefore, access to land is a human right because it is essential for providing room, safety, and creating identity and basis for domicile or dwelling place to reside in permanently. Land is also on the other hand an important resource for development and sustenance of our life. Development is a process of allocating and utilizing resource such as land for economic benefits of society, marginalizing grass roots women from accessing land results into complicated disputes needing resolution. Therefore, the law should be sensitive to the above concerns to ensure that men and women are not unduly discriminated. This conference is appropriate and timely, therefore we thank the organizers.
