Monitoring large scale land acquisitions using open data platforms for improved decision making

Ojoyi

Large-scale land acquisitions continue to be an important issue for governments, development organisations, NGOs and farmers’ organisations all over the world; this remains the case even in times of global economic slowdown, recession and crisis. The scale of this trend and its significant impacts on rural transformation and livelihoods make it necessary to further monitor, observe and positively influence such deals wherever possible. It however remains apparent that lack of evidence on the drivers and implications of these land acquisitions and investments, and the findings are so far inconclusive. It is important to note that, while many countries participate in the ‘global land investment’, only a few countries can account for majority of land acquisitions. Without access to important land related data made available through open technologies; activists, policymakers, journalists, and other stakeholders may be unable to effectively monitor ways in which land is being accessed, used or governed.
