Parcel-based land information systems, or cadastres, form a subset of spatial information systems in which the fundamental structure for collecting, storing, and retrieving information is the cadastral parcel. Although such systems may contain environmental, infrastructure and other land-related information, their primary objective is to provide a complete, up-to-date record of land tenure, value and land use in graphical and textual format. This paper reviews the development and structure of cadastres, together with their relationships to other land information systems. Examples of systems now under development are briefly outlined, and some of the institutional, organizational, and technical requirements for implementing such systems are identified.
