People and the future of the built environment

Heywood, Ann

Sustainability is now a global theme which increasingly influences all human activity, but particularly how we develop and manage our built environments. After a decade of intensifying sustainable activity it is clear that people and society are an equal partner in the tri partite relationship of economy, environment and society that forms sustainability. There has been an evolution of understanding about sustainability and green issues that has moved from the soft matters of landscape, ecology and heritage in the early 19900s through to the hard solutions dealing with energy and carbon efficiency and now coming back now to the softer matters of people and society. Both economy and environmental factors are easily quantifiable and the difficulty of quantification of people factors may have contributed to the relative lack of research until now.
