Wan Maimun Wan Abdullah

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is a symbol of national pride. The development of KLIA began in 1992 and was officially opened on 27 June 1998. That gave the period to develop the project i.e. plan, design, construct, migrate and operate the airport in a record time of 6 years compared to the international average of 8 years. KLIA project comprised more than 100 contract packages and was built at a cost of approximately RM10 billion (US$3.5 billion). This paper intends to provide insights and lessons learnt in the successful implementation of the project by correlating these lessons learnt with the findings of a recent study that postulates that the elements of a project success comprise four (4) success criteria and four (4) success factor groups.
