Public and private planning for land readjustment in peri urban areas in Ilala, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Rapid urbanization in Africa contributes to challenges in spatial distribution of people and utilization of land resources. Cities’ sprawl is gradually becoming harder to deal with as an ever-increasing urban population, which demand for land and consequentially influence changes in land planning in peri-urban areas, where conversion of agricultural land to urban land uses has been rampant. While development of peri-urban areas in the global south is shaped by new plans both formal and informal, remarkably, little attention has been paid to the LR as one of the promising tool to address the informality of land in these areas. The study adopted qualitative research methodology to bring the discussion on LR projects to facilitate production of spaces in peri urban areas. Encouraging Private Public Partnership (PPP) in land delivering projects in peri-urban areas is important to ensure effective use of resources and reduce delays to achieving the new urban agenda.
