Public land survey system/geographic coordinate data base in our 200th year
Hostrop, B.W. & Mates, D.T.
With abstracts in English, German and French.
May, 20, 1985, commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Public Land Survey System. While our surveyors continue to conduct original surveys and dependent resurveys to define the public land of the United States, an additional task has recently been assumed by the Division of Cadastral Survey. Accurate geographic coordinates on survey corner positions are essential to the automated records systems, geographic information systems, and land information systems now being developed in our high technology society. The surveys of the last 200 years, as well as the surveys presently being performed, are the foundation for the Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB) of the Public Land Survey System now being constructed by Cadastral Survey.
