Rangeland rehabilitation and establishment of a wildlife resource in sustainable rangeland management in Al Badia region

Plus: the outcome of a video conference held on 2nd february 2006 to discuss the case study and the main issues on Syrian agrarian reform and rural devleopment.

A case study was prepared to review the impact and lessons learned from project GCP/SYR/009/ITA Rangeland Rehabilitation and Establishment of a Wildlife Resourcee in sustainable rangeland management in dry environment. The case study was briefly discussed during a teleconference as an entry point to renew the commitment and provide elements for the development of a strategy to promote a sense of responsibility and a wider discussion on land reform and rural development among all stakeholders including national government, peasantts organizations, civil society and the international community. The outcomes of the teleconference will form the base of an open discussion at ICARRD meeting and the concerned parties will present a project proposal for the development of a strategy to promote policy, technologies, support services, and general capacity-building activities for the sustainable management of rangelands and better and more secure access for poor pastoralists in a market oriented economy.
