Report of the Republic of Latvia

Following the re-establishment of Latvian independence in 1990, one of the first tasks for the government was to reestablish private property as one of the main economical and political conditions and as far as possible to restore the justice in respect to the former owners and their descendants. However, along with the obvious success of the land reform its implementation is also facing serious problems. But these problems mostly are the same in any country in transition. The main goal of the present reform is to establish an up-to-date system for managing the land and real property based on the safety of private property guaranteed by the government.
