Sustainable practice and approach to preserve the government assets

Yacob, Syamilah

Traditionally, asset have developed without proper planning does not adopt the system of planned asset maintenance. They are often fragmented, unsystematic and rarely systemic. Maintenance and replacement programs were not formulate, only carry out emergency repair or maintenance when the needs really arise and means that, we are forever working under the strain of under funding for emergency maintenance works with little of preventive maintenance. What will happen to these trillions of Ringgit Malaysia of asset in the next 50 years? These assets will deteriorate and continue deteriorate rapidly if we donnt have the knowledge and good practices in looking after them well. Their remaining useful life may not be appropriate and irrelevant any more to accommodate the service highly demanded by publics. Hence, asset management has been introduced recently in the public sector to accommodate this need. We need asset management to assist in developing and managing them for sustainability in term of economic prosperity, social equity and environmental integrity. Government Asset Management Policy has been developed to describe the direction, principles and implementation of asset management strategy to be applied by all government agencies. This is to ensure the creation of assets to meet the delivery of government service; asset management can be implemented more efficiently, the asset information to be put in a systematic, integrity and accessible; and comprehensive asset management practices can be implemented and monitored.
