Potsiou, Chryssy A. & Yerach Doytsher

This paper presents research compiled by the authors, within the FIG Commission 3 work plan for 2006-2010, on current urbanization aspects, its causes and impacts, and the modern technical tools for the support of good governance and environmental management of sustainable urban areas. The purpose of this research is to help planners, surveyors and governments to develop common awareness of the problem and its impacts and to share knowledge about the new tools available for better decision-making and organization of urban areas. In the first part of the paper, a brief investigation on the development of the phenomenon of urbanization and its current trends is attempted, with an emphasis on the emergence of megacities in the 20th century. As humanity has never experienced such urbanization rates in the past, a research is made to identify the basic social, economic, and environmental impacts of the rapid urbanization rates and the results of this research are illustrated by examples and statistics. It is emphasized that the current situation brings new challenges for planners, surveyors and governments.
