There are still many obstacles, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, that hinder the development of surveying as a profession and, hence, the African surveyor as a professional. These obstacles, or problems, include underdevelopment and, above all, mismanagement and corruption by irresponsible government officials and politicians. To apply information technologies in that region may seem irrelevant especially if basic survival is a more urgent issue. Corruption will affect all aspects of development including education and research. The high costs of acquiring, installing and maintaining a GIS is one problem, and the lack of trained personnel and inadequate local funding is another. However, African countries must join the high-tech revolution. Increased use of GIS and GPS is the only way forward.
