Although the Metis inhabitants of certain Alberta settlements were given a land base by the provincial government in 1938, their rights to the land they occupied fell short of actual ownership. As a result of the Metis Settlements Act, which came into force in 1990, the fee simple title in the settlement lands has been granted by the province to eight incorporated settlement associations which may, in turn, transfer title and lesser interests to their members. A regulation made under the Act in 1991 established a land registry, based on model land titles legislation, that is specially designed to serve the settlement lands and those who make use of them.
