The power of cooperatives
EAFF Advocacy Newsletter Issue 6, 2011
A strong farmer organization is a relevant farmer organization. That is, one that adequately addresses the needs of its members. In this edition we highlight the impressive performance of one of EAFF members the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU) from Ethiopia. OCFCU is an example of a strong farmer organization. By highlighting their good performance in service delivery to farmers, we intend to showcase the sustainable benefits of wellrun cooperative societies. In this issue, we also showcase some of the findings from the various policy research work commissioned by EAFF over the past year including the studies on large scale foreign acquisitions of land in the region starting with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Kenya. At the national level, we present the outputs of a meeting between farmer leaders in Tanzania and members of parlia-ment from the Agriculture, Land and Natural Resources committees. Similarly, from Uganda, we present outputs from a meeting between farmers and policy-makers on the topic of agricultural finance.
