The provision of continuing professional development

Hoogsteden, Chris & Enemark, Stig

This paper looks at issues concerning provision of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), both formal and informal. Who can provide CPD, and how that might be provided, provides a theme here rather than the actual content of CPD. After placing the FIG philosophy and its formal declaration on CPD in a wider context, CPD is viewed in terms of past professional education models (the traditional technocratic approach) and future options such as the developing post-technocratic model. Selected facets of CPD provision are discussed including curricula integrations; alternative providers, developments of provider partnerships; and, the changing shape of physical delivery. Emphasis is given to provision of CPD at University level including an example of an overall policy.
