Abdulla, Salim Rashid

Land management and administration entails making decision and implementation of decisions about land. Cadastral surveys which produce cadastral information of land have always been used in various ways to make and implement various decisions on land and landed properties. Cadastral information give location of land parcels, define boundaries, gives sizes which are fundamental pieces of information on the issues of land allocation procedures, valuation of properties and reduction of litigation. As well the information has been used as criteria for assessing and levying land tax as well as land rent. Other notable use and advantages of cadastral information is that the owner of the land can use it as collateral in banks to acquire loans. Generally the cadastral surveys as practiced in Zanzibar give the fundamental information for land registration as required by law, facilitate conveyancing and ease proper planning and facilitate management of land as a scarce resource. However the cost of surveying is very high and generally beyond the reach of the majority of the population. The present cadastral survey methods need to be improved in order to make surveying more quicker and less costly so as to make it affordable to the common man and make it contribute more in the national economy.
