The Rural Environmental Registry and the Governance over the Rural Landscape in Brazil.

Gustavo Oliveira, Carlos Sturm, Janaina Rocha, Bernardo Trovao, Raimundo Deusdara

With the "new Brazilian Forest Code", instituted by Law no. 12.651 / 2012, the bold proposal to register all rural properties and possessions in Brazil has gained momentum and today, the positive combination of social participation, technological advancement, normative obligations, environmental survival and the rational use of natural resources, enables the Brazilian society to build, interact and enjoy the System of the Rural Environmental Registry (SICAR). This innovation emerged with the purpose of assisting in the process of environmental regularization of rural properties and possessions. The owners and landholders themselves record the information of their rural properties (location, perimeter and use forms), areas with native vegetation, areas of consolidated use and areas of restricted use (Areas of Permanent Preservation - APP, Legal Reserve - RL, and of restricted use). By the end of August, more than 4.3 million rural properties have been registered, totaling an area of 413 million hectares.
