The rush for peri-urban lands :an other matter of worry for land governance in West Africa : a case study in Mali

Djire, Moussa

These last 4 years, the world wide interest for large scale land deals has a bit eclipsed another strong aspect of land governance in Africa: the management of peri-urban lands. In several african countries, land in peri-urban areas has been snapped up by the emergent urban middle class composed of traders, government agents and other operators who had amassed vast sums of money thanks to the unbridled liberalism that accompanied the more open business environment and corruption. As demographic growth and galloping urbanization pushed the capital out towards neighboring villages, land in parts of localities adjoining big cities was parceled up and sold to applicants for housing plots. This process creates a very explosive situation which constitutes major factor of land insecurity and conflicts.
