The surveyor's role on urban renewal in small Italian city centers

Manoloto, Cromwell

The present paper discusses the prime role of surveyors when it comes to urban planning, specifically to restore and promote the re-use of old buildings present in most Italian town centers. It also aims to illustrate the real situation of small Italian towns, usually neglected or overshadowed by the glory of more famous Italian cities. In fact, the said structures, built more than a century ago, are considered, not just as houses, but as true cultural and social patrimony that needs attention and protection from the local authorities. Recovering them from the recent urban migration will definitely have a notable positive effect in economic, social and civic aspects. Through a sample project, the author wishes to demonstrate the different phases and key factors that the surveyor should follow.
