Third world megacities: the road to poverty
Korsman, N.B.C.
South Africa has experienced a major economic, urban and political transition during the last two decades. The three major metropolitan areas Cape Town, Durban and Gauteng have experienced very rapid population growth during this period. It is a commonly held view in South Africa that urbanization is desirable and leads to economic growth. However the actual facts prove differently and the portents of increasing poverty in Greater Johannisburg can clearly be seen. In this paper an overview is given of the growth of cities in relation to economic development from the earliest time to the present.
