Towards achieving sustainable physical development in Lagos State, Nigeria

The paper examines the concept of sustainable development with emphasis on Lagos, Nigeria. It delve into literature on physical development efforts especially on the influence of planning legislations on the city land use structure and the cityscape in general. Existing problems identified are classified into physical/environmental, cultural/sociological, managerial / legislative problems. Efforts towards sustainable physical development in other parts of the world were also examined upon which suggestions are presented on how sustainable physical development can be achieved in the growth process of Lagos. Among specific suggestions offered by the paper include need for public participation in planning, capacity building, integration of information technology into planning practice and that planning should not be commercialized.
