Why standardise?

What are standards? How might they affect surveyors? What should surveyors do about them? Are they a surveyorrs friend or his foe? What is the role of the surveyorrs professional body in guiding him in matters of standardisation? This paper sets out to address these questions. Its first half draws the conclusion that standards, properly utilised, are a surveyorrs friend, and that there is a key role for professional bodies. The second half of the paper reflects on the work of FIG in this area to date, including in the cadastral domain, and its plans for the future.
